Departures

Judge takes advisory role at private equity group


Steve Judge is stepping down as CEO of the $8M-revenue Private Equity Growth Capital Council, but will remain as a senior adviser through the end of the year.

Judge has held the top spot at PEGCC since 2012. He first joined the council in 2007, where he was VP for government relations before his promotion to CEO.

Judge, 61, has spent the last two and a half years battling cancer. The group said in a statement that, while his ongoing treatments have been successful, the experience has led him to realize that time is his most precious asset and he could not commit to leading PEGCC for another five years.

"After more than eight years at the PEGCC and four years as president and CEO, the time is right for me to step back," Judge said. "This decision comes as I reflect on how I wish to spend my time and how best to advance the long-term goals of the PEGCC."

Cruise lines CEO leaves after one month


The $17M-revenue Cruise Lines International Association is searching for a new leader after its CEO quit a little more than one month into the job.

CLIA announced that CEO Thomas Ostebo stepped down Aug. 12 due to personal reasons. No further details were provided.

Ostebo joined CLIA July 6. He had previously been director of strategic management for the U.S. Coast Guard.

The new CEO was to provide some stability to an association that has undergone major changes in recent months. CLIA's previous CEO Christine Duffy left in February to become president of Carnival Cruise Lines. CLIA also shut down its offices Arlington, Va., and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to open a single headquarters in Washington, D.C., earlier this year.

CLIA announced that Cindy D'Aoust, EVP of membership and operations, will be interim CEO until a permanent leader is found.

Growth Energy CEO steps down


Tom Buis won't be leaving the $21M-revenue Growth Energy anytime soon, but he will no longer be CEO.

The ethanol industry association announced July 31 that Buis has been named co-chair of the group's board of directors. As a result, he is stepping down as CEO, a position he has held since 2009.

"As co-chair, I will remain engaged in growing membership and advocating for policies that benefit American farmers and consumers, but I'm also at a point in life where I'm ready to assume more of a guiding role as a leader on the board," Buis said in a statement.

Buis first joined Growth Energy in 1998 as VP of government relations. He previously was senior agriculture policy adviser to former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) and worked as a legislative assistant and legislative director for former Rep. Jim Jontz (D-Ind.).

Growth Energy has retained recruitment firm Korn Ferry to help find a new CEO.

Vehicle association looking for new CEO


The $636K-revenue Vehicle Protection Association in Selbyville, Del., recently announced that its CEO, Chris Carenza, has departed for other opportunities.

Carenza is a former assistant attorney general for the state of Missouri, where he also was director of the state's Do-Not-Call Unit.

The association's board of directors has started a search for a new CEO.

Augusto leaving foundation for blind


Carl Augusto will retire from the $8M-revenue American Foundation for the Blind in spring 2016, the group announced Aug. 11.

Augusto has worked at the New York City-based organization for 25 years. He is the group's fifth leader in its 94-year history.

Lansing to exit CTAM


John Lansing will step down as CEO of the Cable and Telecommunications Association for Marketing in September to become CEO of the Broadcasting Board of Governors, an independent federal agency that oversees Voice of America and other broadcast media outlets.

Before joining CTAM in 2013, he was president of Scripps Networks, the owner of HGTV, the Food Network and the Travel Channel.

AmericanHort CEO to lead SMPS


The $3M-revenue Society for Professional Marketing Services has hired Michael Geary as CEO, effective Oct. 8. He replaces Ronald Worth, who left in March to become executive director of the International Association of Assessing Officers in Kansas City, Mo.

Geary currently is CEO of the $2M-revenue AmericanHort, which has offices in Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio. He previously was executive director of the Nursery & Landscape Association Executives of North America and the Ohio Produce Growers & Marketers Association. He also led the American Institute of Architecture Students for more than six years.

He has a bachelor's degree in communications processes and disorders from the University

Major general to lead ISOA


The $546K-revenue International Stability Operations Association in Vienna, Va., has appointed James Lariviere as president.

Lariviere, a former major general in the U.S. Marine Corps, most recently was deputy director for politico-military affairs (Africa) on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

He holds a master's degree in national security affairs from Georgetown University.

Copper association promotes new leader


The $66M-revenue International Copper Association in New York City has promoted Anthony Lea to president.

Lea most recently was SVP, marketing and strategic planning, at the association.

He has an MBA from Warwick Business School in the U.K.

Jones joins biopesticide group


The $200K-revenue Biopesticide Industry Alliance has hired Keith Jones as executive director. He replaces Bill Stoneman, who is stepping down after leading the group for seven years.

Jones most recently was general counsel and director of professionalism at the American Academy of Actuaries. He previously was general counsel for the National Association of Clean Water Agencies.

He has a law degree from Temple University.

The $23M-revenue National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts has hired Catherine Cloud Barré as SVP of policy and politics.

Barré most recently was founder and principal of Langley Consulting. She previously was a senior adviser to the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

She has a law degree from the University of Virginia.

Kevin Donnelly has joined the $14M-revenue National Multifamily Housing Council as VP, government affairs.

Donnelly joins NMHC from the National Association of Realtors, where he was a legislative representative. He previously worked in the U.S. House of Representatives as a legislative director and district director.

He has a master's degree in national security studies from National Defense University and a master's degree in public management from the Johns Hopkins University.

McClelland currently is senior policy adviser for House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). He previously was senior policy adviser to former Rep. John Campbell (R-Calif.).

Will Hupman has joined the association as director of government affairs. He most recently was director of federal government and external affairs at Alpha Natural Resources. He previously was legislative director for Rep. Morgan Griffith (R-Va.) and legislative counsel for Rep. Randy Forbes (R-Va.). He has a law degree from Louisiana State University.

Vincent Erfe has also been named director of government affairs. He was legislative director to Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio) and a senior legislative assistant to former Rep. David Dreier (R-Calif.). He has an MBA from the University of Maryland.

The $7M-revenue General Aviation Manufacturers Association has hired Lauren Haertlein director of safety and regulatory affairs.

Haertlein joins GAMA from law firm Arnold & Porter, where she was an associate in the Food and Drug Administration and health care group. She previously was a law clerk to Judge James Wynn on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

She has a master's degree in philosophy and a law degree from Duke University.

The $34M-revenue Airlines for America has named John Illson as managing director of safety, effective Sept. 8.

Illson joins A4A from the International Civil Aviation Organization, where he was chief of operational safety. He previously was project team manager for operational safety analysis for the MITRE Corp., assistant safety director for the International Air Transport Association and a pilot for U.S. Airways.

He has an MBA and a master's degree in public policy and management from the University of Pittsburgh.

John Kinsella joined $91M-revenue American Bankers Association on Aug. 3 as VP of tax policy.

Kinsella most recently was SVP and director of tax at U.S. Bank.

Kidwell previously was director of the low-income programs analysis group at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Janet Kavinoky is stepping down as executive director of transportation and infrastructure at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to become director of government affairs at Vulcan Materials Co., a provider of raw materials used in construction.

Before joining the Chamber, Kavinoky was project director for business development and transportation finance at the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials.

She has an MBA from Stanford University.

Jennifer Moore has joined Medicaid Health Plans of America as VP of policy and research.

Moore most recently worked at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, where she was health scientist and team lead of the Office of Women's Health & Gender Research. She previously was executive director for the Institute for Nursing Centers and held positions at the American Nurses Credentialing Center and the American College of Nurse-Midwives.

She has a Ph.D. in nursing, health administration and health policy from the University of Michigan.

In addition to Moore's hiring, MHPA has appointed Margie Shofer as director of state policy. Shofer previously was a communications specialist at the Department of Health and Human Services.

Dunne most recently was assistant director of communications at the American Academy of Physician Assistants. He previously managed communications and media relations for the National Business Aviation Association.

Ann Cohen has joined the $47M-revenue Institute of Internal Auditors in Altamonte Springs, Fla., as CFO, effective Aug. 31. She replaces David Polansky, who left the organization in April to become CFO and SVP of administration at the American Automobile Association.

Cohen is currently CFO at Woodfield Country Club in Boca Raton, Fla.

The $41M-revenue American Council of Life Insurers has named Larry Burton COO, effective Aug. 24.

Burton most recently was SVP of government affairs at CVS Health. Previously, he was executive director at Business Roundtable, reporting to President John Engler. He also spent 17 years working in government affairs for oil company BP.

He has an MBA from The George Washington University.

The $8M-revenue Solar Energy Industries Association has appointed Mike Mendelsohn as senior director of project finance and capital markets.

Before joining SEIA, Mendelsohn was senior financial analyst for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

He has a master's degree in energy management and policy from the University of Pennsylvania.

The $10M-revenue Information Technology Industry Council has hired Ed Brzytwa as director of global policy for localization, trade and multilateral affairs.

Brzytwa most recently was the director for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation affairs at the Office of the United States Trade Representative. He previously was a U.S. negotiator on nontariff barriers to trade issues in the Doha Development Agenda negotiations at the World Trade Organization, first at the U.S. Department of Commerce and then with the USTR.
